January 3, 2015

We’ve crossed the threshold of a New Year. What 2015 brings will depend on the choices each one of us makes. The next full moon, which peaks on January 4, illuminates how we are using our power. The archetype of Capricorn, along with its ruling planet, Saturn, deals with both the manifestation and limitation of physical reality. Spirit is infinite; the material world is not. Day by day, moment by moment, we constantly decide how to spend our time, energy, and resources. We need only look at our lives and our world to see the results of those choices.

This full moon is an extra powerful one, as it amplifies an evolutionary pressure we’ve been dealing with for some time now. For much of 2014, a grand cross, involving Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, and Pluto, was galvanizing us to balance and integrate in four areas of our life - our individuality (Aries), relationships (Libra), home life (Cancer), and vocation (Capricorn). Those with natal planets or angles in the mid degrees of those signs have felt these transformative tailwinds the most strongly. While difficult, grand crosses offer pivotal opportunities to resolve long standing issues and conflicts, if we are able to transcend polarized thinking and move into our heart.

While this full moon forms a grand cross with a different component, the same areas of life are activated, so it’s helpful to reflect back on 2014 for clues as to the patterns and beliefs ripe for radical change now. The first grand cross began building mid-December 2013 to mid January 2014. The second (and by far most powerful) grand cross peaked April 20-22, 2014, during the 5th exact Uranus-Pluto square, while a third, less intense grand cross formed June 14-25, 2014, all spotlighting whatever was holding us back -- a poor self-image, an exhausting family or home situation, a toxic relationship, a deadening job. What challenges were you facing during those times? What steps do you need to take now?

This full moon at 14°30’ Cancer–Capricorn forms a close grand cross with the Lunar Nodes at 14°40’ Libra–Aries, energizing the breakdown of both long-standing individual patterns and collective archetypes. The transiting North Node represents our spiritual frontier; the South Node represents what we are releasing or redefining. In Libra, the North Node summons us toward true equality, peace, and partnership; in Aries, the South Node urges us to mature beyond self-absorption, impulsivity, and aggression.

When any planet squares the lunar nodes, we are pressured to resolve core karmic lessons. Pluto’s square to the nodal axis (exact on January 15 at 13°39 Capricorn) and Uranus’s conjunction with the South Node (exact on January 20 at 12°56’ Aries) reveal that we are engaged in a much larger, collective shift as well: Humanity must rewrite the rules and roles for the masculine, to progress from patriarchy and the domination of nature to egalitarianism and co-creation with all life. Where this full moon and the Lunar Nodes fall in our chart details the areas of life where we are developing courage and initiative (Aries), sensitivity and compassion (Cancer), diplomacy and teamwork (Libra), responsibility and integrity (Capricorn).

Pluto has the longest orbit of the grand cross components, and so represents the most profound changes. The mythic God of the Underworld impels us to bring to light our personal and collective shadows. When something is unconscious, we have no power over it — it has power over us. We can’t change what we don’t see. Pluto’s conjunction with the Sun, the symbol of masculine, creative energy and individual identity, exposes and purges what is not in alignment with our essence and destiny.

The asteroid Vesta is also conjunct the Sun and Pluto, intensifying our focus on dedication, wholeness, and truth. In mythology, Vesta is one of the daughters of Saturn and the keeper of the sacred flame on Mt. Olympus, symbolizing the light of the soul. In astrology, Vesta represents what we must do to keep our inner light alive — a willing and joyful surrender to what we cherish and hold most dear. Vesta in Capricorn instructs us to deepen our spiritual connection, devote ourselves to our true passion, and let the measure of our success be the degree of love and light we shine into the world.

January 6 is the 12th day of Christmas, the day of Epiphany, considered in the earlier times to be more important than Christmas, marking the baptism of Christ and symbolic rebirth into Spirit. The word epiphany comes from the Greek 'to show forth,' to manifest.

The 12th day of Christmas, along with this extra potent full moon, reveals how we are expressing Christ consciousness. Are we living as if everything is sacred, including ourselves? What would we do differently if we realized that we are creating with our every thought, word, and deed? Use the light of this full moon to see how you could more fully embody your divinity, and remember: "Every aspect of our lives is, in a sense, a vote for the kind of world we want to live in.”(Frances Moore Lappe)
